Learning Skills

What are learning skills?

Learning skills are the steps or strategies a person uses to learn.  It may surprise you, but there are many ways a person can learn.  A person’s learning strategy is greatly affected by what is called a person’s preferred representation system.  Does a person prefer to interact with the world primarily visually or auditorially or kinesthetically?  If the person’s preferred representation system does not suggest an effective learning strategy, the person ends up with poor results or has to work much harder to compensate.

What we are teaching are new learning strategies which have been shown countless times to be the most effective way to learn.  Learning strategies are similar to habits.  Installing a new strategy is like forming a new habit--it takes time.  It requires repetition to make the new effective strategy the operative one.

Mastering learning skills is similar to learning to playing a sport.  The coach shows the player how to be effective and the degree of success is a direct result of the player’s practice.  Fortunately, these learning skills only take a few minutes a day for a few weeks to become proficient.

Unlike tutoring, we teach you how to learn so that you are free to learn independently.

"Give A Man A Fish, Feed Him For A Day.

Teach A Man To Fish, Feed Him For A Lifetime”.

Our skill training generally takes 8-12 sessions.  The normal skill training starts with the five basic learning skills—spelling strategy; math strategy; memorizing facts and data; memorizing vocabulary; and reading comprehension.  After, working with the student and consulting with the parent/guardian additional learning skills are taught, it has been found that these skills will help raise a person’s self-esteem and eliminate previous academic issues.

Importance of learning skills

Learning skills unlike subject content apply to many academic activities.  For example learning to spell correctly helps in spelling tests, writing reports, and answering questions on essay tests.  Learning reading comprehension helps when studying, taking tests, and utilizing information in the future.

What is necessary for success?

For the student to become successful the student must learn the new strategy and practice daily until the new strategy becomes the preferred operative strategy.  This generally takes practicing a strategy for about 15 minutes a day for three to four weeks.  The student can use the current academic assignments.  Generally, it takes less time to do assignments using the new strategy than using the old strategy.  Therefore, the study time will be reduced immediately, grades start improving, and the new more effective strategy becomes the operative strategy.

What the A+ Learning Consultant will do

Your consultant is your learning coach for this short journey to attaining the skills necessary for academic excellence.  Your consultant will evaluate the student’s needs; teaches the appropriate learning strategies to both the student and the parent/guardian; and reviews and adjusts the skill training to ensure mastery of the learning skills with the least amount of effort.

What must the parent/guardian do?

To insure success, the parent/guardian needs to insure the student practices the new skills correctly and regularly until the new strategy become the operative strategy.  To accomplish this, the parent/guardian, has a few options.

Option1

The parent learns the strategies and helps the student practice the strategies as taught.  Although the skills are simple, the maximum results are achieved by practicing them daily.  For this option a parent/guardian must be present during every session to learn the strategies themselves so they can help the student.

Option2

We provide tutoring services for parents that prefer professional reinforcement of the learning strategies using the student's current assignments and interests.  This insures the student not only learns the learning skills, but also current school material.  To insure the skills become operative as soon as possible more sessions can be scheduled closer together.

What must student do?

The student must practice the new strategies every day until the new strategies are the operative ones.  During daily academic work, the student must use the new strategies in place of their old strategies.

Overall success plan

The first session is an evaluation session where we determine the needs with consultation of the parent/guardian.

The following skill sessions begin with a quick review and a progress check since the last session.

If satisfactory mastery has been attained, a new strategy is introduced and practiced.

Student practice is outlined.  For each new strategy, there will be a handout provided which include a way to determine if the student is practicing correctly.  We cannot over state the importance of checking to be sure the student is practicing the new strategy rather than using the old familiar strategies which has proven unsatisfactory.

Option 1 student practice:  Between skill sessions, the student and parent/guardian practice as outlined.

Generally the student practice consists of using a strategy for about 15 minutes a day.  Keep it fun.  This practice continues until the new strategy is the operative one.

Option 2 student practice:  Between skill sessions, the student participates in our one-on-one practice session.  In these sessions, the student practices the outlined student practice using the student's current assignments and interests.

Generally these sessions last about one hour.  The recommended number of sessions varies from student to student.  Generally one or two session per week is adequate.  This practice continues until the new strategy is the operative one.
